Winter
All the cows and calves are indoors, being fed a mixture of hay and silage and bedded out every day. The sheep and bulls are outside braving the weather, being fed silage
By the end of Winter the cows are getting close to calving. The shed will be mucked out and re-bedded in preparation for calving to start
Spring
Calving will be starting in the main shed in mid-March with one or two calves born most days
All the lambing ewes come inside for lambing to start early in April
Preparations are underway to turn the cattle out for the summer - checking water troughs and fences. Turnout usually takes place in the final week of April - weather permitting
After turnout the shed will be mucked out in preparation for clipping.
Lambing will be finished by June, and early in the month all sheep will be brought inside and clipped
The cows are separated into groups and bulls are turned out at the start of June to ensure calving starts in the following March
Summer
Grass will be cut down though Summer and baled as silage and hay, for next Winters feed
Crops will be fully grown by now, and late in Summer the harvest will get underway and plans will be made for sowing for next year.
Work will be on-going through Summer to prepare sheep for sale by the end of Summer, when the replacement lambs arrive
Autumn
The bulls are taken away from the cows until next year
Crops will be sown to harvest next Summer, and beef cattle being sold will leave the farm
Towards the end of Autumn, cattle are fed in the fields and preparations are made to bring them into the sheds during November
In November, the tup is put out to the ewes in preparation for next years lambing
